3rd Block's Recycling Proposal

In November, some students from Glenville State College visited our 3rd block class and did a presentation about recycling. They brought with them bags of recyclable items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and paper products. Then they told us a lot of interesting information about recycling and urged us to think about recycling in Gilmer County. Our 3rd block was very curious about all this.

Mrs. McClain had us discuss ways that we as students can be responsible citizens of Gilmer County. In West Virginia studies, we have learned that the responsibilities of citizenship include these 6 things: voting, obeying laws, serving on juries, financial responsibilities, staying informed, and getting involved.

With the help of TechSteps8, we then did research in the computer lab about recycling. We found many ways to recycle and reuse stuff. One of us even found recycling bins for gum, but couldn’t find enough information to carry on with it. So we stuck with paper, glass, and plastic to recycle.

As a class, we voted to research and design a recycling plan for Gilmer County High School to demonstrate how students can be responsible citizens for their communities. Our next step was to design an action plan, and we divided the class into groups to handle each piece of the plan.

We would like to share our ideas with you. We are trying to start a recycling program at Gilmer County High School.

o Bridget and Jeremiah contacted Jack’s Septic Service and learned that there needs to be bigger bins outside the school, so someone could empty the smaller bins into. We can get as many bins as we want, but the cost is 32 dollars a month. The plastic will be picked up the third week of the month on Thursday. The paper will get picked up every Thursday.

o Anthony and Kevin researched what other schools have done about recycling. They learned that 34 schools in Raleigh County recycled 529.2 tons in the 2007-2008 school year.

o Shayla and Morgan wrote small questionnaires and surveyed both staff and students. They learned that most of the students and staff care about recycling. We then anticipated what the students could do to implement a recycling program in Gilmer County High School. And did the following:

o Lindsay documented the project with photography and created a Power Point showing the students in action. (Show PowerPoint as you continue through program.)

o Ashley wrote a sample letter to the editor of a local newspaper to announce the project to the community.

o Jessica wrote a sample script which could be broadcasted on CCTV to announce the project to the school.

o Tiffany designed a sample flyer which could be posted around school. (Show flyer.)

o Conner designed sample posters which could be used to label the recycling bins. (Show posters.)

o Lexsey and Natalie obtained a map of the school and marked locations where the recycling bins could be placed to maximize participation. They suggest we put the bins in
> the cafeteria,
> school kitchen,
> commons area,
> in the office,
> one in both of the computer labs,
> one in the art room,
> and one in each of the gym entrances. (Show map.)

o Michaela and Sarah determined the steps we would have to take if a recycling program was implemented. We would have to:
> talk with the janitor,
> coordinate the ordering of the bins with Jack’s Septic Service and the placement upon arrival,
> and the coordination with the janitor and the administrator.

After we gathered all the information, Christina and Josh wrote the script to give you the information we found.

In conclusion, we believe that Gilmer county High School should consider beginning a recycling program because it will help the environment into becoming cleaner and healthier. It could help the community to become more careful for what we do to the environment.
